"Pelicans at Ruby Beach" oil 2011
The painting of Ruby Beach is finally completed. Once I had removed the log I was sure I had done the right thing, but the heavy paint application had gotten a bit muddy and in the end I wiped the whole lower right portion down and started again. Because the sand ripples were now carrying the whole foreground, establishing the perspective of the ground plane and serving to draw the eye up and into the scene, I wanted to be sure they had satisfying and sensible shapes. "Pelicans at Ruby beach" 24x30 (not quite done!)
I've been busy lately on a studio landscape painting, based on a visit I made back in June to the Olympic peninsula on the Northwest coast. The trip was an amazing one, but because I was an adult leader for a group of teenage naturalists, there was no time for painting. I did take a lot of photographs, however, and this painting on the easel is based on a few of them. As a plein-air painter, it is unusual for me to work from photographs, but it is occasionally necessary and often instructive.
